Serial Port Terminal - Frequently Asked Questions

How may I send a large chunk of data?

You may send it either by setting up a command aliases (up to 1024 characters) or use Send ASCII file options. Command aliases allow you to send data in hexadecimal format using #XX sequence where XX is hex value.

How may I save serial port activity (logs) in a file?

Please, use "Receive ASCII file" option for this purpose.

  1. Select "File" -> "New session" from the Main Menu to open "New session" dialog.
  2. Select necessary connection settings to match the ones of remote COM port.
  3. Click "Open" button.
  4. Select "File" -> "Open port" or click corresponding Toolbar button in order to open local serial port if it is not already opened.
  5. Click "Receive ASCII file" Toolbar button.
  6. "Save As" file selection dialog will appear where you may select file name to save the incoming text stream into. If you select existing file you will be prompted with warning message that you may overwrite some data.

How may I set up command aliases?

I have followed step-by-step instructions in User Manual, however, still cannot establish TCP connection. Any suggestions?

Make sure that:

  • IP address and TCP port number you have set for virtual modem match the server's ones
  • TCP port is not blocked either by your firewall, or by your ISP (Internet service provider). In order to check that, try to telnet remote host on TCP port you specified. Click Windows "Start" button and choose "Run" option. Type in "cmd" to launch MS-DOS prompt. In the new window appeared type the following:

    telnet remote_host_IP_address TCP_port_number

where remote_host_IP_address and TCP_port_number are correct and match the ones you have set in your configuration settings. Hit "Enter" button and try to send anything from remote port to see if you are connected. Additionally, Virtual Modem PRO requires that TCP port 8888 and 8889 are opened in order to be able to create connection configuration and establish port-to-port links.

I have installed and registered ASPT however, whenever I invoke the program I cannot change any setting. Sending and reception is not possible. How to fix this problem?

More likely that you have committed an error while entering registration code. Please, pay special attention to several important points:

  1. Make sure that there are no excessive spaces before/after your registration name/code when entering them into the corresponding fields. Those might have been introduced by the mail client you use.
  2. There should only be letters, digits and dashes in your code. We recommend to execute Copy and Paste operations when entering your registration info.
  3. It often happens that e-mail client breaks the string into 2 rows or introduces excessive gaps. Please make sure that the registration code you enter is a single sting of letters, digits and dashes.

We can also recommend you to copy the code to WORD doc: to shrink the text so that the whole code fits on one line making sure that all spaces are eliminated.
