The main difference between the standard modems and the virtual ones (created by our application) is that instead of using conventional telephone line they use Ethernet network (including Internet, VLAN, VPN, etc.). In the vast majority of the cases the standard modems are connected to computer via serial ports (COM1/COM2 or COM3/COM4). The virtual modems, on the other hand, use virtual serial ports that are the same copies of the real serial ports, and can be accessed via “Device Manager”.
Who can benefit from using virtual modems?
Every automation system that collects data from the remote hosts using modem and telephone line could benefit from Virtual Modem PRO. Among these are manufacturing/warehouse data acquisition systems, fiscal/data transfers in a banking system, retail management, etc.
For example, your bank has invested a huge lump of money and connected all its branches into a Virtual Private Network by fiber optic cable. However, the data transfer system still uses legacy application and conventional telephone line. Instead of spending yet more for new software development, and re-educating your staff you may purchase Virtual Modem PRO. It acts as middleware between modems and Internet.
As the result you may use the software you get used to and take all the benefits of the faster and more reliable network.
How does it work?
Virtual Modem PRO uses virtual serial ports technology which fully emulates real serial ports and duplicates all their functionality. This innovative technology allows selecting any available protocol and opens a wide range of new creative opportunities for derived applications.
Virtual modem attached to a virtual serial port, works in the same way as the real one (supports Hayes AT commands), however it uses TCP/IP protocol to establish connection to remote host. To create such connection the first virtual modem (local host) should be configured
as a TCP/IP server that listens to incoming connections, while the second one (remote host) should be configured as a client and initiates the call.
Every instance of the virtual modem could be configured to be server or client at any time depending whether you want to generate outgoing call or accept it (same as the standard modems).
In addition, you may specify the TCP port which will be used to establish the link and IP-address or hostname of the server to connect to.
In order to establish such client-server connection you should install and set up Virtual Modem PRO on both ends. Single license allows you to install and use Virtual Modem PRO on two computers in a network. Eltima Software offers a 14-day try-before-you-buy demo license to evaluate Virtual Modem PRO to decide upon the purchase. OEM license allows you not only to install the software on any number and embed the technology into your own software, but also extend and modify Virtual Modem PRO (Source Code License may be required).
Since version 3.0 Virtual Modem PRO emulates fax modems (Fax Class 1 protocol compliant). Now you may set up and use Windows Fax service or any third-party application to send/receive faxes to any host on the Internet without hardware modems! Save you money on purchasing fax machine and sending long-distance faxes by using fast and reliable virtual modems! Simply try it yourself and be surprised of the fax transmission speed virtual modems provide which is much higher than the one of any real faxing machine. And you don’t need additional pricy hardware and occupied phone line.
- Create up to 255 virtual modems in your system
- Virtual Modems are absolutely the same copies of real ones – other applications will never see the difference between hardware and virtual modems.
- Hayes (“AT” commands) compatible
- Fully emulates Fax Class 1 modems
- Send faxes to any place on the Internet using virtual modems
- Standard modem S-registers are supported
- Link between Virtual Modems over the TCP/IP line is much faster than real null-modem cable connection and solely depends on your processor speed. Average transfer speed is about 35-40 Kbytes/sec
- Virtual link is much more reliable than common physical
- Automatic virtual ports and modems creation during system boot (prior to user login)
- All major software fax applications are supported (Microsoft Fax/Ventafax/SnappyFax 2000/Mighty Fax)
- User friendly GUI and on-the-fly help. It is very easy to configure Virtual Modem PRO as ISP dial-up connection!
- Microsoft Windows NT4
- Microsoft Windows 2000
- Microsoft Windows XP
- Microsoft Windows 2003
- 64-bit Windows systems
